FAQs

We are starting a FAQs page here to answer some of the many questions we receive. If you have questions about our Central Coast Veterans Cemetery, go to our 'Contacts' page and submit your question.

1. Regarding Disinterment - Family members are responsible for all disinterment costs. State veteran cemetery fees for reopening a gravesite are 50% of the current federal burial reimbursement rate (as of today, it is $745 so the cost would be $372.50) for in-ground cremation and 75% of the current federal burial reimbursement for caskets (as of today that would cost $558.75). There is no fee to reopen a niche ($0 for columbarium).

2. Regarding Reinterment – If the veteran has already used his/her VA burial benefits, then the state cannot be reimbursed for the costs of the burial, so the cost would be equal to the cost for spouses and dependents (current published U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs burial rate for veterans, as of today is $745).

3. Children - Only unmarried minor children may be eligible for burial in a state veterans cemetery. There are regulations on which children are eligible, and the list is long (38 U.S.C. 101(4)(A), 38 U.S.C. 2402(5), 38 CFR 38.620(e)), but in general: Unmarried minor child (including an adopted child or step-child who is a member of the veteran’s household) of a veteran, or member of the Armed Forces of the U.S., or eligible Reservist or National Guard member. A minor child is a person who is unmarried and under 21 years of age, or under 23 years of age and pursuing a full-time course of instruction at an approved educational institution. There are also provisions where unmarried adult children are eligible for burial due to disability and passed prior to a specific age.
